Education is a fundamental need in modern society. One cannot live a productive, self-reliant life without being educated.

Fortunately, most people recognize this fact, and as a result, most children have access to basic education. However, there are many who do not – many who, for one reason or another, have fallen through the cracks (or simple do not have any opportunity.

The literacy rate in Haiti is 50%, which contributes greatly to poverty. An educated youth is the first step towards self-sufficiency.

Whether it’s a youth in Atlanta who cannot read and is ready to drop out of school to a child in Haiti with no access to a school at all, the very real fact is there are literally millions of children who will be left behind. Children who will have no hope of ever living a productive “normal” life like you and I.

It’s sad, but it’s very real.

We chose to put “Educational” right into our name because it’s that important.

They say “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish, and you feed him for the rest of his life.”

And that’s a fundamental that we never forget. See, the cause of most poverty is education-related. So a short-term solution (like food, blankets, medicine, etc) is only the beginning. It’s when you also treat the cause that the problem truly becomes eradicated.

This is why education is at the forefront of almost all of our efforts. Whether it’s working directly with schools, after care programs, libraries, or even helping adults complete their secondary education, we make certain that the people we help have the building blocks necessary to become self-reliant.
