Our Programs

Our programs are targeted to three specific countries – The US, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Here are a few facts about them in relation to what we do.

The United States

Despite being the richest, most powerful, and most advanced nation on Earth, the United States has an eye-opening number of poor, especially poor children.

  • The poverty rate for minors as recently as 2006 was 21.9%. This means more than one in five children lives in poverty (this is the highest child poverty rate in the developed world.)
  • Additionally, the standard of living for those in the bottom 10% was lower in the U.S. than in any other developed nation except the United Kingdom.
  • Families now make up 40 percent of the country’s homeless population. Within these families, more than 1.3 million children are homeless at some time each year. On any given day, at least 800,000 Americans, including about 200,000 children, find themselves without a home.

Haiti

In plain terms, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in the world, malnutrition is rampant, and illiteracy is close to 50%.

  • 10% of the child population in Haiti will die before the age of 4.
  • 7% (approx 300,000) of the children in Haiti are enslaved (yes, enslaved). They are as young as three years old, and often suffer sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. Many die.
  • 70% of the population lives below the poverty level.
  • 30% of the Haitian population is either ill and/or underweight.

These are some of the things we are looking to change.

Dominican Republic

Haiti’s neighbor is another shockingly poor country. Today in the Dominican Republic, almost 30% of the population is under the poverty level, and things like clean water and basic medical care are a problem.

  • The Dominican Republic has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the Caribbean – with 32 infant deaths per 1,000 born.
  • Of those that live, due to malnutrition and no access to medical facilities, an additional 40 will not live to see their fifth birthday.
  • Homeless street kids often turn to drugs and prostitution. The ready supply of disenfranchised youth has led to the Dominican Republic becoming a major cocaine hub (a large amount of the cocaine entering the US passes through the Dominican Republic.

The Children of the Dominican Republic need our (and your) assistance. Visit our donations page to see how you can help.
